Seems to be a sound insulation issue- I've noticed the same with A4/A6 TDIs 
vs Passats.

The A6 2.5TDI I drove yesterday sounded like a V6 when I gunned it, no 
dieselly noises inside. Superb car, my current top pick for everyday car. 
Make mine an Avant with Multitronic, please.
