Don't be afraid Glen, try swapping it out. I don't think you will be losing
as much as you think. The worst that you are going to do, is get a better
lobe grind on the 272. WRT cam timing, I've run the 272 with a adj cam gear
for almost 10 years. The 272 does well at 2 degrees or so (no more than 3,
more than 1), and brings the kick down about 500rpm . But it sucks gas, and
rightly so, you are blowing it thru the valve overlap.
All that said, overlap is an issue, period. As rpms get higher, overlap
becomes less of an issue. But the 272 is a N/A cam, it was designed to be.
It also has the highest lift of any aftermarket cam available 11.1mm.
I'm not arguing your choice of toys, only presenting that you can easily
evaluate cams in under 1hour. Torque is the addiction. If you really want
to get that beast going, change out your turbo, the k26 will do better than
the 24 with your application, I'd bet.
2.4 liters is covering up a lot of the issues others would be finding more
quickly. I will share that the difference between cams is so obvious, you
won't need more than butt calibration to get you started in the right
directions.
