This is a possible warning sign that the collar is about to come off
the transmission shift rod.
Grab a flashlight and look at the top driver's side of the tranny and
you can see the other end of the linkage; it's a collar w/arm, with a
set screw/bolt, that grabs a purchase on the shift rod, which has a
indentation that the bolt fixes into. If you can't find it, have
someone shift the tranny while you peer in, you'll see it immediately.
Chances are that bolt is finger tight...if so, pull the screw
completely(first put the car in any gear, to make repositioning the
collar etc easier), clean it up, apply some loctite, and reassemble.
You can just tighten it, but it'll probably work its way loose again,
hence my recommendation for loctite.
