pardon my ignorance

Welcome as a rookie shade tree mechanic. We've all been there!
To add to the previous response:
1 bar equals about 14 psi. It is a common unit of measurement used for both
turbo "boost" and oil pressure on these cars.
In determining total turbo "boost", you must first subtract atmospheric
pressure from the equation (about 1 bar +/-). Thus a boost gauge reading of
1.4 bar really equals 0.4 bar or about 5.6 psi of "boost". Boost gauge
readings below about 1.0 bar are indicators of manifold vacuum.
Bar measurements are also comon on Audi oil pressure gauges. Same unit
conversion into psi.
Although some may disagree, as someone new to working on cars, I would
suggest a Haynes manual over the Bentley. The Bentleys are more detailed,
but they also generally assume a higher level of competency (they are the
"official" shop manuals). Haynes manuals tend to explain things in more
simple terms, plus they are usually available for about $12.95 at Pep Boys
and they do make one for the Type 44 Audi 5000 (don't know if it covers
turbo models or not). When you need a high level of detail or a good wiring
diagram, the Bentleys are usually more help.

Short answers are that bar is "metric" for pressure measurement and it gets
applied to the amount of pressure under which your fuel/air mixture gets
pushed into the engine by the turbo, while chip generally refers to part
of the engine control unit electronics hidden in the outer side of the
passenger footwell. The ECU reads info from a number of sensors and uses
that data to determine fuel flow, among other things.
If you're going to work on these cars, you'd be advised to obtain the
Bentley repair manuals.
