Mobil 1 filters? groany brakes?

Two questions, unrelated:

1. I've been a stickler (just what is a stickler?) for Mobil 1 oil & OEM 
filters on my type 44. Has anyone tried the K&N filters or Mobil 1 filters? 
Yay, nay?

2. Noticed on some hard braking (especially going down a steep hill and/or 
turning simultaneously) a loud groaning. Brakes fine, but noise is a bit 
scary, like a destroyer rubbing against a pier. Note it's not the typical 
"brake squeal" noise.  To wit: my dad's answer to squeaky brakes, "That way, 
you know they're workin'."
