55mm will give you a nice interference fit, 55.5 would slide right over.  
This is a tough size to find, though, so you may have to find something 
slightly bigger and shim it with some sheetmetal or the like.

 90 quattro?  I have the later rear suspension (two piece strut and hub).
 
 I'm trying to get coil-overs, but I need to know the O.D. of the strut
