I have been exposed to malicious rumors faulting injector cleaner for
causing a stuck/jammed air plate assembly, but I don't buy it.

betting the cars were not running "perfectly" before the treatment (I
would never throw a $5 bill in my gas tank because the car is running
great, I know that!), it could be that the problem that the cleaner was
supposed to fix is simply getting worse.

Or, in reverse, that the car was once more out of whack, tuned to run
that way, and now is self cleanig a bit (detuned from the mistune) and
the cleaner fixes it *even more* and now it needs to be readjusted to
run right with things cleaner.

I'd buy either of those theories over the cleaner hurting the system,
although that is possible in a sense, like crud busting loose in the
lines and clogging an injector line (my Dad had this happen to his
eyeball fuel line and lost the sight in his left eye as a result -
better than a heart or brain fuel line though!)
