Being a curious chap with some spare time on Easter, I looked through my
hardcover book from Audi, titled "A History of Progress." On page 20 there
is a thumbnail on Horch's professional career, and the date 1909 is
displayed as when he had a falling out with the people controlling the
Horch factory that bore his name, and in that year he left that factory and
started a new facility in Zwickau, which he also called Horch-blah blah
blah. His old company contested the name that he hung on the new Zwickau
door, and court action forced him to choose a new name, which was
"AUDI." The factory was renamed "AUDI Automobilwerke GmbH" on April 25,
1910 (quote from The Birth of Audi, pg 23, A History of Progress."

So, for me, that pretty well explains the "75 years of engineering
progress" theme in the 1986 Audi advertising campaign. That campaign was
certainly taking place at the same time the automotive world was
celebrating 100 years of automotive history. But Audi chose to participate
in that celebration to focus on it's own unique part of that history, and
it was convenient to go back to 1910 and commemorate the birth of the Audi
company in Zwickau. Hence...Commemorative Edition.
