Humm... this has started me thinking... how about a Coupe GT 2.6? Would one of these larger displacement I-5s work in Type 85?

Not anymore, I'm afraid. VW's latest South African ad is a sad farewell
to the Microbus. The T3 will not be made anymore. :( The latest engine
used in it is a 2.6-litre 5-cylinder engine with Bosch Motronic
injection which had a new inlet manifold that housed the fuel injectors
(initially bottom-fed injectors, but the later models had the usual
top-feed units) and was quite similar to the manifolds of the 10-valve
turbo engines (ie. throttle to "front" of engine).
Outputs of the last 2.6 was 100KW and 200Nm, with 190Nm being available
from 1900rpm to probably 4500rpm. Quite a puller.
There are a few 2.6 engines for sale around South Africa, but the prices
vary from $800 to $1600 or more. There are several companies providing
rebuilt 2.5 and 2.6 units on an exchange basis. I looked at all of this
when another lister was interested in the 2.6 engine, but the prices
shot up quite a bit. I'm not sure what will happen to prices now that
production of the T3 is being stopped.
Now we can only wonder how long it will be before VW South Africa stop
producing the Mk1 Golf. :)
