I have to come to the defense of the old 5-cyl Benz turbos. An '80s-era
Mercedes diesel can get carboned up when driven a lot in city traffic --
that's what makes them smoke. A car in good repair that gets a lot of
high-rev highway use won't have that problem.
BTW, I'm always intrgued to note that the top gearing on my '82 300cd seems
very similar to that in my '87 4000q.
