Hi all,
Here's my report of the annual Ascencion Day event, the combined Dutch Audi
Clubs' track day at the Lelystad Speedway Circuit.
The day started out hazy and foggy, but it turned out very nice, with
temperatures eventually reaching over 25 C and 100% sun in the afternoon.
Got myself a nice sunburn.
This day is always an event where the nice cars come out of their garages
for the show event and the ever-increasing number of specially built track
cars makes this an event you cannot miss!
The morning and part of the afternoon were used for the auto-x, the final
event was the sprint.
The show event included no less than three V8s (pretty rare cars here,
expensive to buy and to run), a genuine Sport quattro (one of 21 blue ones,
the first I'd ever seen!), three 100 Coupe Ses, two type 43 Audi 100s, an
urS4 4.2, several 10v and 20v urquattros and of course many Coupe GTs,
Coupe quattros, S2s, an RS2 Avant, and lots of 80s and 90s.
I drove there in my 1988 90q, together with my brother in his 1985 CQ and a
friend in his recently-acquired 1976 100 Coupe S.
The real crowd-pleaser was the urS4 4.2 (on slick tyres) which combined
incredible speed with a complete absence of noise or drama. The car just
went like stink and cornered as if on rails.
There were several dedicated track cars- from memory:
-ca. '77 type 82 Audi 80, stripped out and with superb suspension, very
quick and nimble
-1984 80 quattro, stripped-out, roll cage etc. Fueling problem prevented it
from being competitive
-type 44 tq Avant, stripped-out, roll cage, S8 Avus wheels, incredible to
see such a huge car being hurled around the track with careless abandon
-ca. '81 Audi 80 1.6 FWD in full AudiSport battle colours, looking and
sounding good, quick but needed suspension work
-several stripped-out and prepared type 85 Coupe GTs and Coupe quattros,
two of which were for rent if you didn't bring your own track car (these
are used once a year when they're thrashed to within inches of their lives,
but incredibly they keep on running) One Coupe GT with a 20v engine was
incredibly quick, almost as quick as the urS4 in fact. Fellow lister Ferry
Stolp shared a stripped-out CQ which ran pretty well on slick tyres and
stock suspension. More mods next year, Ferry? :-)
-two FWD A4 Avant TDIs, quiet and quick
-my friend Dennis' daily driver, a 1985 Coupe quattro, which he was even
brave enough to lend to his sister for a coupla runs
-crappy-looking 80q in bright orange with S2 engine and superb suspension,
took first in the sprints
-even the Sport quattro made a couple of runs, clearly displaying the
twitchy nature of these beasts. If you drive these quickly, you're a hero.
It was a superb day with lots of action, nice (and not so nice) driving. No
crashes this year, a coupla off-track excursions but nothing serious. Great
noises (nothing beats a Sport quattro with no silencers!), great chat and
friendship. There's really nothing like the Audi Clubs for friendship and fun.
Pics will be up soon (probably before next Monday) on www.acgn.nl, under
'meetings', 'Lelystad'. I've taken lots of pics myself which I'll probably
put up on the 'web myself.
Now I need a cold beer.
Tom
