Having done it both ways.
Replacement Axle, 6 weeks and 4 Axles later. (Parts America, I do not know
who their rebuild supplier is. It to a lengthy telephone conversation to
convince them they had sent me the wrong part 3 times. Yes I do know what
the right part looks like and how long it should be...)
parts cost $69
or
1/2 day, one outer CV joint replaced, cleaned, repacked and rebooted the
inner.
Parts cost $160 (new joint $130 + inner boot kit $30)
I would go with replacing the joint.
1) You have a new CV joint
2) You have the correct Axle length
3) less headaches
4) Done right in less time
useful hints:
1)Axle nut should be removed and replaced with all 4 wheels on the ground.
2)NAPA should have a set of the spline drivers for reasonable $$ (I thought
the bolts were socket head, almost striped them out)
3) Use care installing the Axle as the A-frame (lower control Arm) can have
sharp edges.......... and make holes in your new CV boot. BTDT :-)
