When a model year starts (was RS4)

At the Dealer parts counter one time the guy took me behind scenes and
showed me a few screens , which was not the ETKA. At the time we were
working out the alternator rating for my car based on one of the 3 digit
codes on the data sticker in the boot (trunk). When were done with that he
took my chassis number and looked into another screen and told me that my 89
model year 100 Avant had been been manufactured in May 1988 and was one of
the first thousand or so of the facelifted 100's (eyebrow dash, wider rear
track, all that stuff). From what he showed me it was clear that there is no
single day of the year that next years model starts getting built.
Any audi parts place should be able to tell you when the particular first
production date was for any model and model year combination. It varies
widely but is very often between May and July in the preceding year and the
tendency I noted was that it had got earlier in recent years.
