timing marks on JT engine

Hello all. Need some advice please. Pulled the engine
of of my Syncro today. I'm doing the clutch, timing
belt, oil sump gaskets, etc., etc. Here's the thing.
My buddy and I decided to make sure to line up the
timing marks before removing the old belt. The mark
that is supposed to be on the back side of the cam
sprocket (according to Bentley) is not there. There is
a dot on the front side of the sprocket. But when it
is placed where Bentley says, the flywheel mark, and
front V-belt pulley mark don't line up where they are
supposed to. Bentley says if engine is in car, align
the TDC symbol on flywheel with lug cast onto clutch
housing. Engine is out but with eyeball measurements
using the mounting bolt holes, when that symbol is
where it should be, the front V-belt pulley mark lines
up with a different lug than the one specified in
Bentley, and the cam sprocket mark is no where near
where it should be. This is causing much pulling of
hair and gnashing of teeth to say the least.
We were wondering if the cam sprocket might be on
backwards. Mr. Fixit, which is the nicest name I can
call the previous owner, told me the water pump and
timing belt had been done by his mechanic. Judging by
some of his other work we would not be suprised at
anything anymore. The car ran suprisingly well for the
last year and a half so we figure it's in time now.
Any suggestions, hints, or words of encouragement? Or
should we just put the new belt on and start from
scratch?
Thanks for any help and sorry this is so long.
