timing marks on JT engine

There are 3 marks you are concerned with 1) use the flywheel for TDC of the
crank, the front crank pulley is NOT reliable as its position shifts, do not
use it 2) the cam sprocket, if you can't find a suitable mark on the pulley,
it may be backwards, but that would greatly offcenter the pulley and the
timing belt may not even stay on it, all you need to ensure is that both #1
cam lobes are facing up, and that both intake and exh valves [for #1] are
completely closed. Sometimes I use a caliper and measure the tip of the cam
lobe down to the cylinder head to ensure that both lobes are equidistant from
the head. Also, you can use a screw driver in the #1 spark plug hole to
measure the top position of the piston. 3) the ignition rotor lines up with
a mark in the distributor housing. If you don't get this right, the car will
never start, and no cranking and turning the dist. to try to get it "in
range", just get all your setting correct, and things will go very smoothly.
