Oil consumption

I have seen many posts pertaining to oil consumption and the various types
of oils. From what I have read and from personal experience, those of us
who are using Mobil 1 of various grades in our Audi V6's can expect what may
be regarded as excessive oil consumption. My 12v V6 is consuming about a
quart of oil every 2000 miles with M1 10w30 or 15w50. I switched back to
dino oil a while back, and oil consumption dropped immediately to less than
a 1/2 quart every 7500 miles. Put Mobil 1 back in and the oil consumption
rises once again. I have also read that some listers have had leaks develop
due to the better flow properties of synthetics in combination with worn
seals in older motors. My car does not have any leaks whatsoever, so I know
it is not going past the outer seals, it must be the rings or the valve
seals.

I am going to experiment with various grades of other synthetics to see if I
can determine a pattern (improvement over M1). My interest has been piqued.
I hope I figure it out before blowing too much oil into my expensive Audi
catalytic converters.

Cheers,

Subject: Oil consumption

I have a '98.5 A4 with 51000miles on the 30V engine. The car has been
getting
Mobil 1 15W50 since about 7000 miles.

What is the expected oil consumption on this engine? I ?think? I am getting
about 1 quart consumed about every 1000-1500 miles. I will keep close eye on
it.

Thanks,
Chris
