Cat converter removal

Hello list, on a visit to an exhaust shop i had a chat with a mech and
we got to talking about cat converters.  he told me about a guy  with a
mitsu eclipse 2.0 n/a motor removed his cat and claimed some noticeable
performance improvement.  I think the mech might have been trying to
sell me.  does removing the cat have much of a point to it?
that mitsu does sound really cool now,but would i lose some low end
torque?  Maybe some of you who have does this procedure can tell me if
it was worth the effort or taking the darn thing out.
i understand that the benefits are better with a turbo motor, but mine
is just a 1988 90 with the 2.3 n/a 5 cyl.
