Acceptable performance?

I don't know if you are satisfied enough with the temps, but I still
must agree with your mechanic on the ability for the system to be
converted. The York compressor should do just fine during a conversion
to 134a. In the manual for the compressor, there are instructions on
use of the compressor for 134a, as well as the fact that they are still
installed on some systems that begin with 134a.
One thing that I have noted, is that newer systems that have 134a
usually have a different condenser style, which is significantly more
efficient. The ones that I have seen are more of an extrusion than a
tube and fin type deal. That would probably help out a bunch too, but I
haven't found one that is available for our cars.

Griffiths refers to it as serpentine tubing.
Anyhow, my point is, I don't think running with the conversion itself
will present you with any problems. Most of the problems that you would
encounter, (and it seems like you have run across in your adventures)
are related to other aspects of the system, like things that are
malfunctioning, not the actual capability of the system. You will lose
some capability, simply because you normally use about 80% of the spec'd
refrigerant with a converted system.
I'll bet installing the cardboard won't hurt. With a pusher fan
installed already, I don't know if it will make as much of a difference
as it would have otherwise, but like I said, it can't hurt.
Let us know how it works when it really gets hot out. That is, if it
ever stops raining long enough....
Good Luck!
