Duh, that slipped my mind. Then you'll need to rig up some switches for the
throttle linkage (not too hard). One to engage when the throttles are
closed, and one to engage when the trottles are like 80% open.

The actual distributors are the same, you would use the original from your
car, unless you like spending $150 for no reason. You will be replacing your
old "computer adjust" with an earlier form of "computer adjust" that is not
linked to the fuel system at all. This system is the one on 1.8l 16v VW's.
The system consists of:
Electronic control brain (w/ vacuum connection to intake manifold, you'd
need to rig something to get a stable vacuum)
Knock sensor
Coil (you might be able to yse yours)
Ignition Control Unit (big transistor)
Throttle switches
Wiring harness (connects to knock sensor, hall sensor on distributor, ICU,
ECU, coil and throttle switches. Needs a fused/switched +12v and ground, has
output for fuel pump relay)
Basically the brain reads the vacuum signal to set advance based on load
(and throttle switches), as the hall effect sensor in the distributor is
triggered, it fires the ICU which in turn fires the coil, and a spark is
generated in the appropriate cylinder
If knock is detected then the ECU backs off the timing until knock
disappars, then holds it at the level of max advance that does not cause
knock.
Go to <http://www.volkswagen.org/EngineSwap/Default.htm> for more info and a
wiring diagram. Most of this is for 8v, but the components are the same.
It's a little dated. The Knock sensor stuff is at the bottom.
You should be able to get the whole deal for less than $100 at a you-pull-it
junkyard. Quite possibly for much less. The above link had a link to a place
that'll sell you the whole thing for $150. Make sure they know you need it
for a 16v.

Sweet! There goes the fuel mileage, here comes the fun. Is that a TWM
manifold?
Good luck,
Jonas
