The A2 Golf had viscous all wheel drive in the following versions (with
shameless google search results):
1. Golf syncro, 90hp 1.8 8-valve (just a regular Golf with AWD, made
'86-'91)
2. Rallye Golf, 160hp 1.8 8-valve G60 (only about 5000 made in '89-'90)

3. Golf Country, 98hp 1.8 8-valve (final assembly at Steyr-Daimler-Puch)

4. Golf Limited, 210hp, 2.0 16V G60 (rare bird...70 cars in 1989)

The only one I can't comment on, since I haven't driven on is the Limited.
The regular syncro Golf is just that, a regular 1.8 with AWD need I say
more. The Country is cool, I had one for a while back in the fall of 1991
and enjoyed it, it was actually quite competent in the light off-road scene.
The Rallye Golf in its stock form is a bit overweight and underpowered, but
that can be remedied easily.
There were also A3 Golf syncros built, variations from regular 90hp 1.8
syncro hatchbacks to 190hp VR6 syncro wagons.

There were two A2 Golfs with Awd - viscous coupling setup. Golf Country had
raised suspension, awd-vc, skid plates, and brush bars (and I believe a 1.8
16v, although they might have sported a 2.0 16v in 1989-1992). Quite
cool...hard to find though. More common, it seems, were the Ralle Golf
G60's, which had tqc-esque flares, awd-vc, and a supercharged 2.0 16v.
They're also rare, but tons of fun. One was for sale, US legal not too long
ago in Canada, for around 20,000$. Nice car, even at that money. You
couldn't build it for that much. I don't think that the A3 was available
with awd at all...but I may be wrong. There might have been a VR-6 syncro
Golf, anyone? You can get awd golfs over here - you just have to pay :-)
Later!
