Headlight Switch ..

It's your headlight switch - they wear out over time. Found that out with
my 89 200 and basically just used the brights in lieu of replacing it. 200
stock brights aren't really bright nor are the regular headlamps.
Bluafergnugen, Midtex have them.

However, when I bought my V8 - big mistake. The headlight switch was burnt
out ( 124k) and thought I could use the brights temporarily. No way!! As
others can attest - the V8's bright lights are truly a hazard to be reckoned
with.

Was pulled over by the police twice. They did ask what kind of Audi this was
as they had never seen a V8 before.

On the way home the other night my headlight stopped working. I can get
them to come on by holding the combination cruise control/brights lever
back. The blinkers and side markers all work fine.

It bahaves as the car were not running. As i'm sure everyone on this list
knows, when the car is off, the main headlights will not come on even if you
leave the headlights on (a feature that's saved me from a dead battery more
than once). You can make the main lights come on by pulling pack on the
cruise/brights lever. The sidemarkers, or running lights, will turn on when
the switch thrown, even when the car is off.

It makes me wonder if the problem isn't related to ignition switch.
Something must tell the headlights when the car is running that it's ok to
be on.
Is there something in the switch assembly itself that could fail in this
way? I've had apart and i can't see anything obvious.

Has anyone has a similar experience? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jacob Behm
