AC air temp sensor thermistor hack

Hi list,
I've got a faulty exterior air temperature sensor for the AC system on my
89 type 44 tq (the one in front of the condenser at the front of the car).
I can't remember where I saw it but someone somewhere has a btdt on
substituting a NTC thermistor into the wiring for a faulty AC exterior air
temp sensor. Anyone remember it? I think I need a 1 k Ohm @ 25 degrees
celcius thermistor (which I can get from RS components). I can get hold
of either disc thermistors or bead thermistors or axial lead thermistors,
the bead ones look most suitable (but not the cheapest) option.
If I can manage I'll carefully split open the existing sensor and
substitute the new thermistor, is that how it is done or do folks just cut
the whole sensor off the end of that bit of the loom, splice the
thermistor in and leave it bare? A dealer sourced part is c. 50 gbp (yes,
that's correct, for a resistor on a bit of wire!!) and even the fancy bead
thermistors only run to about a fiver each. At the moment I plan to pull
the old sensor and see if I can carefully split the plastic sensor body to
replace the thermistor part, but any btdts before I start are very
welcome!
Cheers in advance,
Graham.
