'87 4kq: A/C: good as it gets?

My center vents are definitely cooled. In fact, they are about 2 degrees COOLER than the outside (possible heater core issues). It is a physical impossibility for the center vents to not be cooled on the 4K. ALL the air for the HVAC system passes over the evaporator when you hit the AC switch. What the center vents are not is heated. The air for the center vents never passes through the heater core.

OK, I gather that I should have been looking to the side vents. All I can say
is that the owner's handbook gave me the impression that cooled air came through
the center vents. No occasion yet to drive around at length w/AC on, but I've
confirmed that the air from the side vents is subjectively quite a bit cooler.
However, I did get the following off-list:

> The A/C in my '85 4kq gets cold enough that I have to aim the
> center vents away from my hands.

This doesn't seem to square with the comments I've gotten that the center vents
provide uncooled outside air. TIA
