Yes, but you can set it to full auto, these speeds are optional for those
who want to shift.

Haven't noticed that when I drove the A6 Multitronic recently. Just a
slight hesitation when you drive off.

Probably tyres. The new A4's steering is excellent, more feel than the
first generation cars and no torque steer (at least not with the 100 hp 1.9
TDI- more powerful versions might have more problems there).
It's really a fun-to-drive car, even in FWD configuration.
