Answers to questions below...
1. There is another smooth pulley that is mounted to the oil pump housing on
the I-5. The backside of the timing belt runs on it. It is mounted low so
you won't see it without taking the cover off. I does not move so
technically the water pump is the "tensioner". Maybe this smooth pulley is
the "tensioner" your mechanic replaced, not the water pump? It's easy to
replace the water pump during a timing belt job. If the mechanic didn't do
the water pump, that's too bad. 145,000 miles is alot for a water pump.
You dont want this thing seizing up. It could break the belt and cause
serious engine damage...
2. Getting the diff out of the car is not too hard (if you have a triple
square tool for the driveshaft bolts). I've never had it apart, but I'd bet
any good mechanic with a press and proper mandrels could put some new
bearings in it. Keep in mind that this will require the ring/pinion
alignment to be checked (shimming). A good axle shop should be able to
this. You might someone on the list who has the whole diff for sale in a
parts car?
3. I've had this happen before. Take the wiper arm off, clean out the
metal shavings, then put it back together and tighten the nut. Now get a
roll pin or piece of wire (coat hanger is good). Drill a hole sideways
through the whole assembly and insert the pin. This will work until you can
find new parts (or forever in my case). If you JB weld it, how will you get
it apart?

If i could get some good feedback on a couple questions for a Quantum Syncro
similar to 4000q.
1. I had the timing belt replaced by a mechanic (lazy me, I already had the
engine open for new lifters I put in) and he asked if i wanted the tensioner
roller replaced also. I said yes since I didnt know when it was last done.
I know the water pump is the belt tensioner right? And new water pumps from
thepartsbin.com come with the toothed roller so isnt that tensioner roller?
He didn't replace the water pump so I have not a clue what tensioner he
replaced since i cannot locate it at any part of the belt. Unless he pulled
off the toothed part and put a roller in that. That leads me to the current
question. I have a rattle that sounds like pebbles in a tin can at all
RPMs.
I listened with a screwdriver and believe its the water pump. Everyone
agree? FYI 145,000 miles on car. So would it not have made sense for the
mechanic to replace the water pump instead of just the tensioner roller?
2. How difficult is it to open up the rear differential for replacing
bearings? There is a growl when pulling and decelerating. Has anyone run
into snags? I dont think its too bad. I have leaking seals and go through
gear lube every 500 miles.
3. Does anyone know where to get a wiper assembly. My left side wiper
spline
has stripped out completly. I was thinking of just JB Welding the wiper on
the spline.
Thanks in advance,
DJ
