Linguistic survey--NAC

Since the list has so many people from all over, it strikes me that this is a
chance to get some data points on something:

When you were in grade school or high school, you were probably familiar (even
if you didn't do it yourself) w/the practice of tearing off a small piece of
paper, chewing it up real well, and then throwing it (or maybe blowing it
through a soda straw) at someone.

Where were you living when you were this age, and what did you call the thing
that got thrown at another kid? If you lived several places (I didn't), multiple
data points are welcome. Please respond off-list, of course, and keep the
"linguistic survey" text in the subject line. I'll be using that to have my mail
client send the responses into a dedicated folder. TIA
