Try the Golf GTi 4-motion. It comes with the VR6 or the 1.8t engine from the
A4 and AWD.

It would have to be a quattro. Especially for driving over hwy17 in winter.
quattro is why I own Audis.

If all you want is a FWD A3, not too much difference with a Golf 1.8t, same
basic chassis and configuration, different shape.  I'd really like to see
the A3 quattro or the S3 here, granted, basically a TT, but I can't see
myself ever driving a TT, the A3q would be a good small car platform for
more mods.
