Either way, the only thing removing the shaft will get you to is the bench,
the procedure is still the same, off the car or not.

Only if the bolt goes _through_ the hub and into the cv..otherwise, if you
thread the bolt into the cv only, it will go out of the back of the cv and
hit the shaft, forcing the cv outward.

This procedure works on any of the later cars that use a through bolt for the
axle instead of a nut like the earlier cars.
