URS4 transmission problem.

1st gear is toast. Common failure on the earlier transmissions. Tell your
friend that this is his opportunity to upgrade to a close ratio 6-spd. If
he gets a CRB (RS2 6spd gearbox) or a late CGR (S2 6sd gearbox) they have a
hardened main shaft and wider 1st gear. Though they're getting tougher to
find. It's not a direct swapout as you do have to change the tail housings
between the transmissions in order to fit in the C4 chassis, as well as a
small cover where the reverse switch is mounted, but it's no big deal. Many
have gone that route, myself included. Conversely he could try to locate a
CBL (S4/6 6spd) which will be a direct swap but won't have the hardened main
shaft, though I believe the later ones have a wider 1st gear. They would be
cheaper than a CRB/CGR. These are all imported from Germany, or some Audi
tuners may have them, and are all used of course. Have him join the S-car
list and get more info.
