Broken steering rack to body mount (was strange popping noise in steering)

Got my '92 100S back from the mechanic today. The popping noise in the stee=
ring turned out to be a cracked body mount for the driver side of the steer=
ing rack. They had to weld the piece of sheetmetal back into place. The car=
 has never been in an accident (at least while I have had it, and my mechan=
ic did not see any evidence of other damage in the area), so why this occur=
red is a mystery to me. My mechanic works on a lot of Audis, and he said he=
 has never seen this before. Has anyone else had this happen to their Audi?=
 I just hope the weld holds...
