88 Audi 5000 - interior lights??

My 88 5000 cs Q's interior light doesn't work when the doors are open.
This is really annoying especially when it's dark!  The center light
works when switched on manually and one time out of 30 it works for a
second or so, when the door is slammed. Don't think it's the switch on
the door as I have played around with it and all 4 door switches
can't be faulty right! Trunk lite also don't work as well. Is the
interior lite on some type of  timer, turns off after a while, perhpas
the controller is bad - oh shite, I do have a spare dash!
