(I want) more torque from a NG motor

If you want more torque, you have a few options...
First, put the JT head and cam on the NG block. It has smaller intake
valves, and a mild'er cam. It'll give you even more torque than the JT
because of the added compression over the JT. You'll loose some top end
though. It would be a hell of a lot of work, the NG intake manifold won't
fit the JT head, and you might have to modify the injector lines to fit into
the JT head as the NG has the injectors in the manifold.
You might try using the Eurovan cam in it, those motors made about 100hp and
more low end torque with 2.5 liters....The car would really suck on the top
end with it.
You could change your driving style =)
I know you said you don't want it (for whatever reasons) but a proper turbo
motor will smoke any N/A 2.2 in the 2000-3000 RPM range (BTDT), and after
that....woah!
