Hi mileage (143K) A6 that I just purchased is perfectly quiet when cruising=
on the road. When I slow to 5-10 mph and turn the steering wheel either =
left or right, I get an audible low sounding non metallic clunking sound. =
The control arm bushing on the passenger side was loose so I replaced both=
the inners and outers on both sides, but alas the noise is still there.
It looks like the struts are the originals for there is some rust on the sh=
aft protruding above the top nut. It seemed tight but I did not have the t=
ool necessary to fool with it. The surrounding nuts were not super tight s=
o I cranked them a bit, but the noise persist. My mechanic thought that it =
might be bad strut stops.
The struts still seem fine even with the 143k. I am not adverse to changin=
g the complete assembly provided that it is actually the cause. Can anyone=
point me toward possible causes of this noise.
