Wallace, I put a Pierburg pump in my 86 5ktq earlier this year after a nasty
stranding (50,000,000 miles from nowhere)

It was a complete straight drop in operation. I don't think I had to deal
with any of your 3 issues listed. It was many months ago and I don't
remember the specifics but we brought the pump to the car (50,000,000 miles
from nowhere) and installed it with basic tools. No surgery was required.

Just go for it. The pump is made for these cars.
