Agreed with Dave G's experience: No, the center console does not need to come out.  Just the glovebox, AC drain tray, then separate the AC hardline fitting underhood beside intake manifold.  Now remove raintray cover, 4 screws in intake plenum, and remaining 2 screws for AC box.  the AC box will fall on the floor now, exposing the heater hose clamps and heater core trapdoor. If our USA cars didn't have AC, the heater core would take about 1/2 hour.
