Over the weekend I found a near perfect condition grill & headlight surrounds
on a newly acquired 4kq at the local boneyard.
While installing them on my URQ I noticed that the center grill had a
blanking plate over the aux. rad. position. As our weather is cold and my car
has been running cool I thought I would give it a go. It's easier than
replacing the thermostat.
What I found was that the car ran slightly warmer (which was good) _but_ the
starter heat soaked and would not turn the motor over till it cooled down
when I stopped for gas. The engine temp was fine, but the starter and, by
association, turbo were hotter than should be.
Conclusion; a radiator mod (Dialynx?) and removal of the aux. rad. might
increase turbo longevity as it allows more cool airflow to the turbo &
starter.
Just an observation.
