mystery pump - need to fix soon?

No harm, it's just irritating.

Undo the two nuts that hold it to the head, bottom one first, pull it
off, pull out rod, bolt it back on.

It augments the intake manifold vacuum for the power brakes, unless you
try using the brakes while revving the engine, you will never notice the
difference.
