MORE on mystery pump

I have heard the ATF trick suggested as well over the years. Not sure how
much I buy into it. It is mostly for freeing up sticky (and clackety much
like said pump) hydraulic lifters, the vacuum pump is just an aside really.
Marvel Mystery Oil is another alternative I have often heard of being used
for this.

Personally, I would just change the oil more often, and/or run synthetic,
and let the oil detergents to their job.

The pump is very easy to remove, clean, lube, and reinstall. 1/2 hour max.
Once you do this, the noise should be gone.

Removing the shaft is, IMO, a bad idea. The vacuum assist for your brakes is
there for a reason. Modifying the braking system from stock to the potential
detriment of braking performance just to make a noise go away would not go
over well if you had a brake fade related accident.
