You've just learned a valuable lesson about old German
cars.  Leave the engine bay dirty!!!

Same thing happened to my 16v jetta after I cleaned
the engine bay.  You probably have water in the
distributor.  Pull off the cap and shoot WD-40 in it.
It'll displace the water and it evaporates quickly.
Wipe down the cap and reinstall.

It took several days and running several times for my
car to dry out and start working normally, even with
the WD-40 trick and using contact cleaner on
everything I could find.  Dirty engine=happy engine!
