5 cyl vacuum pump noisy

> The vacuum pump in my 1990 80Q (2.3L) is intermitantly noisy (removed the push rod and the noise went away). Two questions: Can it be cleaned (I assume it's gummed-up) and what is the vacuum used for? With it disabled, I didn't notice anything different.

it backs up the manifold vacuum to assist the brakes.
