Type 44Q handbrake

I consulted my Bentley for the 87 5ktq, and it shows an exploded diagram at
46.19, where two rivets hold the parts in the lever handle (push rod with
release button screwed in one end, spring, pawl at other end of push rod,
rachet, and your sheared off adjuster rod.)

Bentley indicates "grind off rivets to remove parts, use new rivets when
assembling."

So, apparently one grinds off the rivets with a Dremel and unscrews the
release button, and the parts in parenthesis above can be replaced as needed.

Looks like only one rivet might need to come off to replace the adjusting rod.

Glad to see your posting now and then. Hope this helps. Have a good weekend.
