Actually, the VR6 or Audi V6 engines aren't an ideal engine swap for the
Vanagon.
There are kits out there to swap a VW inline 4 cyliner (as opposed to
the horizontal) in place of the Waterboxer. If anyone is really
interested, I think I could probably find a link somewhere in the ton of
bookmarks have have saved.
The VW inline 4 with a supercharger would make a pretty healthy engine.
Another option I've heard of is the Subaru waterboxer.
