If the seals are the same as on my A4 1.8Tqm, and they probably are, you
don't need any special tools. If you are doing one seal on the front of the
engine, you might as well do them all.
Prior to removing the seals, make a note of the seating depth so you know
when you've seated the new ones far enough.
To get the seals out, drive a sheetrock screw into the seal, being careful
to stay in the middle of the seal so you don't score the metal sealing
surfaces on the shaft or head. Then lever the seal out by using pliers on
the screw. Don't pull straight, the screw will pull right out. Use a
levering motion instead. If the screw pulls out, simply insert another
somewhere else on the seal.
To get the new seals in, use a socket of an appropriate diameter as a
driver. I insert a socket extension bar on the socket and hit it with a
mallet.
To hold the cam sprockets while removing or replacing the sprocket bolts,
one of those cheap strap wrenches you see everywhere is strong enough to
hold the sprocket (more special tool avoidance). I did have to make my own
"special tool" to hold my crank sprocket, though, no way to avoid having to
fasten it to the block when you are applying well over 100ft-lb.
Mandatory disclaimer: this is what I did. Repeat at your own risk!

Gotta do mine and was wondering if there was away around not having to
purchase the audi special tool to replace the seal in there.
