Gas tank evil????

When I changed the fuel filter last week on my 1988 80q, I noticed that
there was some shitty looking gas coming out, it looked dark brown,
rusty colored, certainly a strong tint of it anyways.  The venerable Stacy
Anable tells me that gas is usually reddish colored, and as he saw the
discarded filter, he noticed the unusual color.

I'm getting ready to change the fuel pump shortly here, so I will be
able to see if maybe the pump is rusting or something like that, or if this
gas is coming from the tank itself.  Is this color of gas normal by any
chance ??? Is there anything specific to these early type 89s?? I don't
see any messages about gas tank lining problems/recalls for this one.
I am just fishing for thoughts before I get myself covered in gas again.

On a side note, I leaked 1.5 quarts of mobil 1 10w30 in the last 1500 miles,
with some nice pretty reminders where I park.  argh.....
