Piston ring seating

A friend of mine is rebuilding his AAN engine due to a timing belt
failure (jumped at 80k miles). He has installed new piston rings. I
remember something about a specific ring seating procedure used in the
"old days", accelerating from 30 to 50 mph with full throttle and then
engine brake back down to 30, then repeat 10 times or something. Is
this recommended or needed?
