By-pass valve

I have an '89 MC2 with SJM 1.8 which creates a bypass valve-like noise
when I left of the gas, fairly gently sometimes, even in gear. A friend
suggested it might be the rear main seal. Something is fluffing or
fluttering off the excess boost pressure, but it's not a bypass valve...
not yet. I do have an intercooler with the fitting for a BPV waiting for
install. I don't seem to have any other boost-related issues though so I
don't worry about the sound much. It still goes like stink. Am I living
in blissful ingnorance?
