You can fake the signal from the thermo sensor to test it specifically.
Find some resistors (at Radio Shack, for instance). Disconnect the sensor,
and jam some resistors across the two terminals.
My '86 4kq ran fine cold with 8k to 14k across the terminals. Warming up,
it liked 4k, and when hot, 2k or less. If you are ambitious, you can use a
10k pot, and dial in your setting. It's like a manual choke :-) (Some
listers have even wired the 10k pot into the passenger compartment for a
more permanent replacement to the sensor).
