Hopefully you'll find the answer, but as I read this here's what I know.
4000Q: Tick tick tick tick - sounds metalic, Lifters. The oil drains down
from the journals
and makes that noise on higher milage motors. Louder in the winter.
Eventually goes away but may be many miles of driving first.
Turbos: (100/200/5K & Transplants....mostly) bap,bap,bap,bap which goes
away or lessens when engine is warm is the cracked studs on the EM.
The cast EM metal heats up and "bends" to close the gap for exhaust gases to
escape. "Blatty" sound.
Both sounds are awful but a rebuild is generally not needed.
Blatty sound is louder under heavy load and throttle, quiet under light
throttle, level constant cruising.
Hydraulic lifters vary with engine speed until "well oiled".

Does anyone know if I have lifters that are bad, or if there is
something that I need to replace to get rid of that awful loud noise.
Thanks,
Cade Carvell
