Definitely a road trip.  As for the time, make it quality time with the kids
by taking one (or more) of them along. Depending on their ages, they can
a) drive, b) plan the drive and stops, c) count out of state license plates.
If you take all three, Mom would probably love the time off.  Then you can
say you're doing it for her. :-)

I made a memorable road trip from NH to Cooperstown NY to the MLB
Hall of Fame with my 9 y.o. son, who doesn't sit still. It was a nice
one-on-one weekend. The other two got their turns when they turned 9.
