Grindin' Gears

    Hello all, my 1988 Audi 90 FWD 5 speed has been losing a synchro in
3rd gear.  About 9 months ago it would grind only when the revs were
very mis-matched (shifting from 6500 rpm in second).  Nowadays 3rd gear
will will grind everytime unless i match the revs perfectly.

   So i was wondering what is *actually* happening when i hear that
terrible grinding noise.  I know it cant be good for the car, but am i
actually doing that much damage?

and for my last question... what does it take to repair my problem? and
how much? :D
